Introduction to Betta Fish

Despite how they are often advertised, betta fish are not for beginner fish owners. Betta fish are for intermediate fish owners.

There are several things you can do to help your betta fish live a long, happy life:

-Make sure your tank is at least five gallons. Fish are not supposed to live in tiny tanks or flower vases. Remember that your fish is a living being, not a decoration.

-Consider a heater. Betta fish are tropical fish, native to Southeast Asia. They are accustomed to temperatures in the mid 70s – mid 80s Fahrenheit. It is recommended that you maintain a water temperature of at least 72 degrees Fahrenheit for your betta fish.

-Plant some live plants in your tank. In the wild, betta fish live in densely planted rice paddies. They need lots of places to hide to feel comfortable. You can use fake plants and plastic decorations in your tank, but real plants are better.

-Add dried leaves and wood to your tank. In the wild, betta fish live in brown, murky water. You can add dried leaves and wood to darken your tank water, which will make your betta fish more comfortable. Many pet stores sell dried leaves and wood specifically made for fish tanks. Adding dried leaves and wood to your tank will also add “tannins” to the water, which support fish health. For more information, reasearch “blackwater aquariums” or “blackwater fish tanks”.
